Advocates of health care reform are relying on budget manipulations to stick with President Obama's pledge to overhaul the system without adding to the deficit, critics on and off Capitol Hill say. 
Both independent budget analysts and Republicans say a Senate vote expected this week on a 10-year, nearly $250 billion Medicare reimbursement bill is the perfect example. They say it was sliced out of the reform plans because it would send the cost of Mr. Obama's top legislative priority over $1 trillion.

Senator Thune discusses the $247 billion "Doctor Fix" bill with Neil Cavuto on Fox News. The bill will increase Medicare payments to physicians and will not be included in the health care bill. The Democrat leadership wants to jam this bill through the Senate and borrow the money to pay for it. This does not align with the current administration's promise to remain deficit neutral on health care and to not increase the national debt.

Sen. Thune Offers Amendment to Keep the Next Generation Bomber Alive in Defense Bill

Republican Sen. John Thune says the "next generation bomber" program, which the Obama administration has targeted for termination, has been retained in a conference committee report on the U.S. defense authorization bill.

Thune had offered the bomber amendment during committee action.

In a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, Thune said the U.S. needs a long-strike capability and that it's important to invest in such technology.

In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Sen. John Thune discusses his Government Ownership Exit Plan as an exit strategy for getting the government out of private business:

President Obama has become the de facto CEO of large chunks of our economy, with the power to hire and fire executives, dictate salaries, declare what products should be made, and decide winners and losers in the marketplace. The inherent conflicts of interest are enormous and should be a concern to all Americans.

It is time to bring an end to the TARP emergency measures and come up with an exit strategy to get government out of the business of running businesses. The administration owes the American people a timeline for how it will do this.
