Politico: GOP tries again to end TARP
December 10th 2009
From Politico:
Senate Republicans plan to revive an amendment that would end the Troubled Asset Relief Program by the end of the year.
Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) will try to attach an amendment, likely to a spending bill, that would end the program by its original sunset date, Dec. 31.
Congressional Republicans have been harping on the idea that repaid TARP funds should go to retire the debt – as is currently stipulated in the law. And they have taken particular umbrage with Democratic plans to use repaid TARP funds to pay for stimulus spending to jump start job creation.
“We don’t think (TARP money) ought to turn into a political slush fund that the administration or congressional Democrats decide to use for all these other priorities they want to fund,” Thune said on Wednesday.
