Prior to Thursday's hearing on health-care reform in Mitchell with Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Sen. Tim Johnson, The Daily Republic asked Sen. John Thune for his view on the subject.

Here is his written statement:

“Health care reform needs to address the strain of rising health care costs on family and business budgets, but simply adding costs to taxpayers and the national debt will not dig us out of the hole. Allowing individuals and families to buy insurance across state lines and allowing small businesses to band together to buy more affordable health insurance are ways we can quickly expand coverage without any increased government spending. Putting health care in the hands of government bureaucrats, as the Democrat proposals would do, will eliminate choices, lower the quality of care, and increase taxes on all Americans."
